Who Am I?

who

What an important and profound question. For many of us we define ourselves in different ways…

Imagine the scenario:

You are meeting someone for the first time, you need to introduce yourself, how do you describe yourself.

Is your name your identity? Your job or vocation? Is that who you truly are?

Who are you?

There is a particularly profound song by Casting Crowns called “Who am I?”

When I first heard this song, it was with tears streaming down my face, thanking God for who He says I am.

“Who am I that the Lord of all the earth, would care to know my name, would care to know my hurt.

It goes on to qualify:

“Not because of who I am, but because of what You’ve done, not because of what I’ve done, but because of who You are.”

If we find our identity in Christ, it matters not what we have done, or who we have been. What matters is being able to see ourselves through the eyes of God.

How does God see us?

You are redeemed – Isaiah 43:1 But now, this is what the LORD says– he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.

You are a new creation – 2 Cor 5:17 –Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

You are a child of God – Gal 3:26 –So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith.

You are joint heirs with Christ – Romans 8:17 –Now if we are children, then we are heirs–heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

You are loved – Romans 8:37-39 –No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

You are royalty – 1 Peter 2:9 –But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

You are not an accident – you were created for a purpose – 2 Tim 1:9 –He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace

Knowing all this, how amazing is it to know who we are, to discover our identity in the Lord Jesus Christ – the one who lived and died for us.

So go on, embrace your identity – it is waiting for you!
